How to Sleep Better with allergies

How to Sleep Better with allergies

If you or someone in your family experience allergies, you might be aware of the relationship between seasonal allergies and sleep issues.

In a lot of cases, allergy symptoms are triggered by environmental and situational factors. That could be things such as pollen and maybe even your pillowcase!

If you’re concerned about hygiene, health and how to sleep better with allergies, have you thought about the benefits of a fresh new mattress? It may not be the answer to all allergies and related concerns, but here at Beds R Us, you can rest assured that all of our mattresses are manufactured with hypoallergenic features.

Knowing that you’re not alone

A study conducted by Galaxy Newspoll shows that poor sleep can be associated with the house dust mite and hayfever, which causes allergic rhinitis. This can also lead to sleep deprivation.

From their survey, they found that:

  1. Nine out of ten Australians experience sleep issues
  2. Relationships are impacted, with some couples forced to sleep in separate bedrooms due to snoring or the restlessness of a person experiencing insomnia
  3. One in three take up to nine days’ sick leave per year

While we’re not medical experts, we can look at these statistics and see that many Australians are likely to be sleeping with some type of allergy. We’d love to help address the topic and we have some products that may be of interest.

Allergy-friendly technologies

They say that ‘prevention is better than cure’. This is appropriate in relation to tackling those notorious nasties that lurk in your mattress. The inclusion of antibacterial/antimicrobial treatments may assist in allergy prevention. This could help to mitigate the impact of house dust mites, pet dander, mould and other allergens in your nearby environment.

Our Australian-made Sleepyhead/SleepMaker mattresses feature allergy-friendly treatments and technologies, such as:

Ultra-Fresh

Ultra-Fresh technology works to reduce bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi. A heightened ability to manage microbes (through antibacterial and antifungal additives) equals less likelihood that your mattress will succumb to odours, staining and degradation.

KulKote Silver

KulKote technology helps to regulate body heat with components that absorb and release energy. This is based on specific melting points. A continuous cycle of heat removal and release draws away moisture from your mattress. Sweat and other contaminants are targeted for reduction. Additionally, silver is known to have natural antibacterial properties.

Bamboo and Silverline

Ultra-Fresh technology works to reduce bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi. A heightened ability to manage microbes (through antibacterial and antifungal additives) equals less likelihood that your mattress will succumb to odours, staining and degradation.

The Meaning of Hypoallergenic Products
and Allergy-Friendly Treatments in Your Mattresses

Hypoallergenic and allergy-friendly are two common and relatively interchangeable terminologies that we see a lot of in the modern retail world. But what do they actually mean when it comes to mattresses?

These types of mattresses are designed with the comfort of those that typically experience an adverse response to allergens (or are particularly susceptible to irritants) in mind. Although the terms ‘hypoallergenic’ and ‘allergy-friendly’ don’t offer a guarantee of safety against allergic reactions these technologies may help to manage your experience of allergies.

So the next time you’re shopping for a new mattress, these may be some options and features you’d want to consider.

Maintaining Consistent
Mattress Hygiene

Overall, managing allergy triggers and maintaining good health goes hand-in-hand with how you sleep. Therefore, on top of the recommendations above, caring for your bedding, furniture, bedroom and mattresses should not be overlooked. You might want to consider an air filter for your bedroom with a medical-grade HEPA filter.

It’s a general recommendation that those susceptible to allergens and irritants use dust-mite resistant mattress protectors and pillow protectors. Wash these along with blankets, sheets and pillowcases in hot water (>60oC) on a weekly basis. But, even with frequent laundering, your mattress can remain exposed to bacteria and other contaminants. Vacuuming the mattress from time to time is usually recommended, especially if your mattress is not (always) covered by a dust-mite-resistant protector.

If you can relate to the tips and recommendations above, maybe it’s time for a mattress upgrade! We have many mattresses to suit different types of sleepers’ needs. If you are considering buying a new mattress make sure you also take a quick read on how to take good care of your new mattress.
